You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.
I can't see the forest for the trees.

Well 80% of the big stump is gone. Over half of the height and almost all of the center, it's been burning for almost 4 days now. People wanted 600.00 to grind it but I figured getting rid of a bunch of old used motor oil and a match was cheaper.

Did you drill it and soak it first? Saw a U-Tube vid on the process, they claim you can even get the roots.

It already had a hole in the center almost all the way to the bottom. I took a chain saw and made a slot in the bottom straight into the hole for ventilation. It will eventually burn every trace of it roots and all. It's already burned below ground level in the center, it's been getting hit by rain every few days but it's to the point if I get it started again will burn it all up.

I took a 55 gal. drum, cut it in half (and then cut the ends like pieces of pie and then bent them up), put that over the stump while burning it. The metal on the sides and the top like a chimney kept the fire really hot and long burning. Usually three loads of scraps wood would eliminate it.
Would burn until it was 10-12" below ground. Was very happy with the results. We had the 'Ash Borer' destroy 55 trees recently, some were nearly 24" diameter and all were very very tall. Wheel Horses have been hauling a lot of wood lately. So many people here in the country have lost Ash trees (an excellent wood to burn) that the value of firewood has gone down to $40/face-cord in mid-MI.

This one was an Ash too Glenn. That's what we have been cutting mostly for years because of that Ash borer, lots of them close by. I have about a dozen of them to cut this summer about 1/2 mile down the road. Amazing how this global economy has killed most all of our Ash trees...
